Main Bearing Color Selection

S65/S85 main bearings are available in three different size thicknesses. These different thicknesses are differentiated by color codes on the bearing shells. The three color codes are Violet (thickest), Green (nominal), and Yellow (thinnest). By mixing and matching the main bearing shells, it's possible to adjust the clearance in approximately 0.00012 inch increments. BMW still doesn't tell us the bearing clearance target. However, they do tell us which bearings to use for what size main journal.
