− | The composition is a | + | The composition is a tri-metal design coated with silver oxide babbit. The surface feels a little rough compared to the previous lead-copper design which used the TriArmor PTFE (Calico) coating. The silver oxide provides better seizure resistance and 30% higher load capacity than previous designs. These bearings are compatible with stop-start vehicles. |
− | ''' | + | '''Silver Oxide, Tri-Metal design''' |
− | Tri-Metal, | + | Tri-Metal, silver oxide is considered the the "next generation" bearing design by Clevite. This new bearing was Clevite's answer to the Glyco IROX bearing design. This is the same bearing design used in the Dodge Hellcat engines. BE Bearings is the first aftermarket manufacturer to bring this new bearing design to the market. Clevite considers the new silver oxide bearing so superior, that they advise it has a wider tolerance spectrum in which the engine is still considered safe. The steel backing is coated with copper, then topped with a silver oxide. The silver oxide is embeddable, meaning small particles can embed themselves in the surface without causing any damage to the crankshaft.
|

There's a lot of discussion about the best for the S65/S85. BMW specified 10W60 weight oil, and many people believe this is too thick for the bearing clearances. Others believe BMW chose it for a specific engineering reason and refuse to switch regardless of the too-thin oil clearance. For better peace of mind, BE Bearings wanted their bearing owners to know they can safely use 10W60 oil with their bearings, just as BMW had specified in the first place.
| There's a lot of discussion about the best for the S65/S85. − | + | The Silver Oxide coating is superior to the previous TriArmor PTFE (Calico) coating. Silver oxide provides better seizure resistance and 30% higher load capacity. To combat the issues with shell thickness inconsistency from Calico Coatings, BE worked with Clevite for nearly two years to bring this bearing to the market. It's ideally suited for the highest horsepower engines, ideally suited for start-stop engines, and protects the crankshaft and bearings at critical times of low oil pressure and/or during start up.
| |

+ | '''Manufacturer: '''Clevite
| ||
+ | '''Composition:''' Tri-metal lead/copper
| ||
+ | '''Coating:''' Clevite TriArmor®
| ||
+ | '''Part Number: '''SP1527HK
| ||
+ | '''Target Market: '''Extra clearance OEM replacement | ||
+ | |||
+ | BE Bearings are a full custom rod bearing designed and manufactured by Clevite. Clevite manufactures the bearings to the BE Bearing specifications. | ||
+ | |||
+ | The composition is a standard babbit lead/copper bearing with additional Clevite Tri-Armor non-friction coating. They are soft faced, and easy on the crankshaft, and compatible with stop-start vehicles. | ||
+ | |||
+ | '''Lead/Copper, Tri-Metal design''' | ||
+ | Tri-Metal, lead/copper are considered the world's best bearings. The steel backing is coated with copper, then topped with a soft lead. The lead is embeddable, meaning small particles can embed themselves in the lead without causing any damage to the crankshaft. Look in the best automotive engines, and you're likely to find a Tri-Metal bearing design.
| ||
+ | |||
+ | '''Used Oil Analysis (UOA)''' | ||
+ | BE Bearings chose the Tri-Metal lead/copper bearings to track the metals in the UOA like Blackstone. Owners with 2008-2010.5 vehicles still have the lead/copper bearings and can track their bearing life with the UOA. The newer tin/aluminum BMW bearings are virtually untrackable in the UOA. BE Bearings wanted their bearings to show up in the UOA, and another reason they chose the Tri-Metal, lead/copper design.
| ||
+ | |||
+ | '''Factory BMW oil recommendations''' | ||
+ | There's a lot of discussion about the best for the S65/S85. BMW specified 10W60 weight oil, and many people believe this is too thick for the bearing clearances. Others believe BMW chose it for a specific engineering reason and refuse to switch regardless of the too-thin oil clearance. For better peace of mind, BE Bearings wanted their bearing owners to know they can safely use 10W60 oil with their bearings, just as BMW had specified in the first place.
| ||
+ | |||
+ | '''Clevite TriArmor® coating''' | ||
+ | For increased bearing life and durability, BE Bearings chose to add the Clevite TriArmor coating. TriArmor is a low-friction coating offered directly from Clevite with a Clevite warranty. It's ideally suited for start-stop engines and protects the crankshaft and bearings at critical times of low oil pressure and/or during start up.
| ||

+ | Mahle Motorsport (MMS) is a bespoke manufacturer based in Kilmarnock, Scotland. MMS manufactures bearings for Formula-1, NASCAR, Indy teams, and many other racing bearings throughout the world. MMS will make production runs as few as 80 shells, but no larger than 1600 shells. Even though MMS has machinery such as presses, stamps, and plating machines to make the bearings, the entire process is run by hand. The quality control coming from MMS should be one of the best in the world. | ||
+ | |||
+ | VP2 is a lead bronze material which is continuously cast onto steel strip. Casting and quenching conditions are controlled in order to produce a microstructure with vertically orientated | ||
+ | bronze columns. This gives the bearing material its superior strength increasing its compressive load capacity. When plated with lead indium it has become the favoured material for | ||
+ | racing engines. | ||
+ | |||

Mission Statement
This wiki page provides measured (derived) results from installing bearings into S65 connecting rods, and measuring the bores to calculate (derive) clearance results and clearance variance.
This wiki page does not claim to provide official manufacturing specifications, and should not be quoted as such. When manufacturing specifications exist, they will be posted and labeled as "theoretical results."
Measuring Methodology
Unless otherwise noted, each set of measurements was conducted under the following conditions.
- Brand new, unused factory (OEM) connecting rods were used.
- Brand new, unused factory (OEM) rod bolts were used
- Measuring environment:
- Room temperature 68-70 degrees farenheit.
- 30-50% humidity.
- Assembled connecting rods sit in room in this environment at least 24-hours prior to measuring.
- Bore gauge calibrated before use
- Results logged and stored
- Temperature/humidity room conditions are data logged using Kestrel portable weather station

Rod Bearing Clearance
Calculating Rod Bearing Clearance
Theoretical Clearance
The theoretical rod bearing clearance may be calculated in the following manner:
Abbreviation | Name | Description |
---|---|---|
JDmin / JDmax | Rod Journal (min/max) | Diameter of the connecting rod journal. Measurements will include the min/max variance. |
BEBmin / BEBmax | Rod big-end bore (min/max) | Diameter of the connecting rod big-end bore. This is the housing which holds the rod bearings themselves. Measurements will include the min/max variance. |
UPRmin / UPRmax / LWRmin / LWRmax | Rod bearing thickness: UPR=Upper shells, LWR=Lower Shells | Thickness of the upper and lower rod bearing shells, measured at 90-degrees. Measurements will include the min/max variance. |
CTmin / CTmax | Rod bearing coating (min/max) | Thickness of the rod bearing coating, if any: 0, if no coating exists. Measurements will include the min/max variance. |
CLRmin | Minimum Clearance | Calculated theoretical minimum clearance: = BEmin - JDmax - LWRmax - UPRmax - (2*CTmax) |
CLRmax | Maximum Clearance | Calculated theoretical maximum clearance: = BEmax - JDmin - LWRmin - UPRmin - (2*CTmin) |
CLRnom | Nominal bearing clearance | (CLRmin + CLRmax) / 2 |
CLRji | Clearance per journal-inch diameter | = CLRnom / ((JDmin + JDmax) / 2) |

OEM 088/089 Bearings
Production and Composition
BMW "088/089" bearings were the factory production bearings between 2007 to mid-2010. When the EU mandated the removal from lead in automotive bearings, BMW discontinued these bearings.
The bearings are soft faced, and easy on the crankshaft.

Bearing Eccentricity: BMW Factory 088/089 rod bearings
OEM 702/703 Bearings
Production and Composition
EU mandates against lead/copper bearings began in 2011. However, S65 engines have been seen with mid-2010 production dates having these newer 702/703 bearings. These bearings remained in production until the end of S65 production in 2013.
The new 702/703 bearings are made from tin/aluminum/copper composition. The 702/703 bearings are substantially harder than the 088/089 bearings they replaced. As a consequence, when a bearing is spun, it tends to cause more damage to the crankshaft in the process.
Manufacturer: Glyco.
Bearing composition: Trimetal Aluminum

Bearing Eccentricity: BMW Factory 702/703 rod bearings
BE Bearings (Version-2): SP1527F
Introduction: February, 2022
Production and Composition
Manufacturer: Clevite
Composition: Tri-metal silver oxide
Part Number: SP1527F
Target Market: Extra clearance OEM replacement
BE Bearings are a full custom rod bearing designed and manufactured by Clevite. Clevite manufactures the bearings to the BE Bearing specifications.
The composition is a tri-metal design coated with silver oxide babbit. The surface feels a little rough compared to the previous lead-copper design which used the TriArmor PTFE (Calico) coating. The silver oxide provides better seizure resistance and 30% higher load capacity than previous designs. These bearings are compatible with stop-start vehicles.
Silver Oxide, Tri-Metal design
Tri-Metal, silver oxide is considered the the "next generation" bearing design by Clevite.
Used Oil Analysis (UOA)

Factory BMW oil recommendations
There's a lot of discussion about the best for the S65/S85. BMW specified 10W60 weight oil, and many people believe this is too thick for the bearing clearances. Others believe BMW chose it for a specific engineering reason and refuse to switch regardless of the too-thin oil clearance. For better peace of mind, BE Bearings wanted their bearing owners to know they can safely use 10W60 oil with their bearings, just as BMW had specified in the first place.
Silver Oxide coating
The Silver Oxide coating is superior to the previous TriArmor PTFE (Calico) coating.

Bearing Eccentricity: BE Bearings SP1527F rod bearings
BE Bearings (Version-1): SP1527HK
Introduction: November, 2015
Production and Composition
Manufacturer: Clevite
Composition: Tri-metal lead/copper
Coating: Clevite TriArmor®
Part Number: SP1527HK
Target Market: Extra clearance OEM replacement
BE Bearings are a full custom rod bearing designed and manufactured by Clevite. Clevite manufactures the bearings to the BE Bearing specifications.
The composition is a standard babbit lead/copper bearing with additional Clevite Tri-Armor non-friction coating. They are soft faced, and easy on the crankshaft, and compatible with stop-start vehicles.
Lead/Copper, Tri-Metal design
Tri-Metal, lead/copper are considered the world's best bearings. The steel backing is coated with copper, then topped with a soft lead. The lead is embeddable, meaning small particles can embed themselves in the lead without causing any damage to the crankshaft. Look in the best automotive engines, and you're likely to find a Tri-Metal bearing design.
Used Oil Analysis (UOA)
BE Bearings chose the Tri-Metal lead/copper bearings to track the metals in the UOA like Blackstone.
Clevite TriArmor® coating
For increased bearing life and durability, BE Bearings chose to add the Clevite TriArmor coating. TriArmor is a low-friction coating offered directly from Clevite with a Clevite warranty. It's ideally suited for start-stop engines and protects the crankshaft and bearings at critical times of low oil pressure and/or during start up.

Mahle Motorsport (MMS) is a bespoke manufacturer based in Kilmarnock, Scotland.
VP2 is a lead bronze material which is continuously cast onto steel strip. Casting and quenching conditions are controlled in order to produce a microstructure with vertically orientated bronze columns. This gives the bearing material its superior strength increasing its compressive load capacity. When plated with lead indium it has become the favoured material for racing engines.

King Bearings
Introduction: May, 2019
Production and Composition
Manufacturer: King
Composition: Tri-metal silver/copper (upper shells), Tri-metal lead/copper (lower shells)
Coating: None
Part Number: CR 224SV
Target Market: Engine rebuild replacement only -- NOT OEM replacement.
Upper and lower shells of the King bearings are different. They are different compounds with different load characteristics. The upper shell are the King K796 SV compound: a silver/copper tri-metal design with more load capacity than the lower shell. The lower shell are the King K794 CP compound: a lead/copper tri-metal design.
The upper shells are stamped SV which indicates the King K796 compound. The lower shells are stamped CP which indicates the King K794 compound.
Information on these King compounds and chemical composition is available at the following web page. http://www.kingbearings.com/material-type/copper-based/
Installation Notes: King CR 224SV rod bearings are not intended for OEM replacements. Usage of these rod bearings requires the connecting rod big-end to be honed to size with new rod bolts. The OEM connecting rod big-end bore is specified between 56.0000 - 56.0130 mm. The King big-end specification is set to 56.055mm -- which is larger than factory specifications. Due to this change in specification, the rod big-end bore must be honed to match these specification before these rod bearings would be suitable for use. Consult your engine builder before attempting to use these bearings as an OEM replacement.

Production and Composition
Manufacturer: ACL
Composition: Tri-metal lead/copper
Coating: None
Part Number: 8B1580H (STD, +0.25 mm), 8B1580HX (+0.025 mm)
Target Market: OEM replacement market; Minimal increase in clearance over OEM rod bearings
ACL Bearings are a full custom rod bearing designed and manufactured by ACL. ACL manufactures the bearings to their own custom specifications.
The composition is a standard lead/copper bearing. The bearing does not contain a low-friction coating.
Set Numbering ACL RACE Series bearing sets are identified by the ‘H’ after the set number e.g. 8B663H-Std. Most ACL RACE Series bearings are also produced in a ‘HX’ version e.g. 8B663HX-Std. The ‘X’ signifies the set will give an extra .001” (.025mm) oil clearance on a standard size shaft when compared to the H-STD set. The wall size of these HX-STD bearings is .0005” (.013mm) thinner than the H-STD Bearings, in all other respects the HX set is identical to the H-STD set. There are selected con rod bearing sets that are manufactured with a dowel hole in the lower shell, to suit a dowel location in the con rod cap.
Oil Clearances
Oil clearances are most accurately measured using micrometres and
bore gauges. Bearing wall thickness measurements are taken at 90
degrees to the parting line (i.e. at the crown of the bearing) using a
micrometre with a ball anvil, for use on the curved ID of the bearing.
Vertical oil clearance is best measured by assembling the bearing in its
housing, with bolts torqued to specification, then using a bore gauge
measure the assembled ID of the bearings at 90 degrees to the parting
faces. The mating crankshaft journal size is measured, and subtracting
this measurement from the bearing ID bore size, gives the assembled
oil clearance.
ACL RACE bearings can be assembled with .00075-.001” per 1” of
journal diameter (0.020-0.025mm per 25mm of journal diameter) plus
.0005” (0.013mm).
As an example for a 2.000” (50mm) journal diameter, 2.000 x .001=
.002 + .0005 = .0025” (50/25 x 0.025= 0.050 + .013 = 0.063 mm)
Bearings should not be polished with abrasive pads or paper, on the
bearing surface, to change the oil clearance.
Picture Description
Questions about the appearance of the RACE Series bearings are
quite common, as this series of tri-metal copper lead bearings have
a very different appearance to regular aftermarket “ACL Duraglide”
tri-metal bearings, which have a light silver /grey appearance.
The RACE Series performance bearings as manufactured have
an appearance that is a dark tarnished colouration, which can
vary from dark black/brown/blue colours. This colour comes from
the electroplating which is the last manufacturing process. The
electroplated overlay has copper as one part of its composition, which
tarnishes to the dark colours described above. This tarnish colouration
has negligible thickness, so once installed in the engine, the crankshaft
journal contacting the bearing, will polish the bearing surface, removing
the surface colour and leaving the bearings with a polished silver
appearance.
Performance bearings do not start out with the silver grey appearance of regular aftermarket bearings, as there is no final silvery tin flash applied to these bearings. Not applying a silvery tin flash to these high performance bearings is a specific design feature. A silvery tin flash for appearance and long term corrosion protection, as applied to the regular aftermarket bearings, can under high loading and heat, move, with the plate migrating and causing high spots on the back of the shells, and distorting the bearing. For this reason the ACL RACE Series performance bearings do not have a cosmetic silvery tin flash applied, so there is no risk of any overlay plate movement on the backs of the shells, giving better bearing to housing contact and better bearing performance and function.

WPC Treated Bearings
Production and Composition
WPC treated bearings start life as standard 072/703 bearings. These bearings are sold through Auto Talent and EAS. An end-user may also send bearings to WPC for treatment. Unlike Calico CT-1 coating, the WPC treated bearings slightly remove material to create a low-friction surface.
Manufacturer: WPC

Calico Coated 702/703 Bearings
Production and Composition
Calico coated bearings start life as standard 702/703 bearings. These bearings are sold through VAC, ESS, and Harrop. An end-user may also send bearings to Calico for coating. Calico adds their CT-1 coating to the surface of the bearing. The coating adds a slight thickness, thereby decreasing bearing clearance. The thickness to each shell is estimated by Calico between 0.0002 - 0.0004 inch.
Manufacturer: Calico Coatings
Manufacturing Defects: There's two primary manufacturing defects associated with Calico coated bearings.
- Calico coating is also placed on the parting lines. The material on the parting lines will affect the "bearing crush" and may wear unevenly or in a different manner than a standard OEM bearing.
- BMW bearings are sold in upper (blue) and lower (red) bearing shells. When the Calico coating is applied, this color distinction is lost. The upper (blue) bearings are slightly thicker than the lower (red) bearings. However, Calico habitually mixes these shells up and returns them to the customer mislabeled: uppers are now lowers, and visa-versa.
